Aged Care Employee Day is an opportunity to recognise the many people who make a difference in the lives of older Australians every day. At Mekong Aged Care, this year’s celebration was made particularly meaningful by the heartfelt messages shared between our residents and staff.

In the week leading up to 7 August 2026, our Lifestyle Team invited residents and staff across both Mekong nursing homes to write messages to one another on paper hearts. Residents shared their appreciation for the people who care for and support them, while staff wrote messages of kindness and affection for the residents they have come to know so well.

Among the messages was a particularly moving note from one of our residents:

People often think that older people living in aged care must feel lonely and sad, being away from their families and dealing with the challenges of illness. But that isn’t necessarily true. Thank you to Mekong Aged Care and its professional and caring staff for helping me enjoy this stage of my life with happiness, optimism and comfort.

On Aged Care Employee Day, residents and staff came together for a special Happy Hour. Over tasty treats and live performances by staff and volunteers, residents took turns reading their messages of appreciation aloud. Their words recognised people from across the organisation – from nurses and care workers to kitchen, laundry, lifestyle and other support teams.

The room was filled with music, laughter and genuine appreciation for the relationships that have grown between residents and the people who support them each day.
